COMELEC union bare reform agenda for new Poll Chair

The rank and file employees of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), led by the Alliance of COMELEC Employees in Service (ACES) held yesterday its General Assembly and Election of Officers at the Knights of Columbus Gymnasium in Intramuros Manila.

Aptly themed “Reform COMELEC,” the assembly yesterday, according to the ACES, is a “testament to the COMELEC rank and file employees’ readiness to take on the challenge to initiate much needed reforms in the poll body.”

To recall, COMELEC Chairman Sixto Brillantes, upon his acceptance of the top COMELEC post, has called on the six thousand poll workers nationwide to “help” him in the daunting task of reforming the poll body.

“With Atty. Brillantes now at the helm, he now must prove his worth, rally the entire institution and lead the urgent task of reforming the COMELEC,” stated ACES President Luallah Pama during the General Assembly.

The ACES then expressed the “COMELEC rank and file workers’ Reform Agenda” for COMELEC Chairman Sixto Brillantes. According to the group, included on their wish list for the new Chairman are:

  • Job Security;
  • Better Working Conditions, and;
  • The urgent need to work on enhancing the COMELEC’s image.

The group particularly called on the new Chairman to ensure that the employees’ rights to security of tenure, career development, regularization of casual employees, decent wages and benefits are respected and upheld. They also called for the protection and security of COMELEC employees’ lives on the frontlines.

The ACES, likewise, stressed on the importance of protecting the employees’ democratic right to organize and to negotiate with management on matters concerning the welfare of COMELEC workers nationwide.

“The Chairman can rest assured that poll workers nationwide are ready and willing to work with the COMELEC leadership with respect to enhancing the Institution’s image,” Pama said.

“After all, we are at the front lines. Kami ang palaging humaharap at sumasalo sa galit ng publiko sa tuwing gagawa ng mali ang ilang tiwaling upisyal ng ahensiya.” –end-
